Thursday we had a full day and target species was amberjack. Headed out with a group of my regulars. We ran out and the ajs didn't disappoint. We caught a quick limit and lots of throwbacks. Biggest we kept was 53" to the fork and estimated 60-65 pounds plus. With sore arms, we moved on looking for other edibles. We marked fish at spot after spot but the fish had lockjaw. We kept moving and would pick off a few fish here and there. The hot zone was closer in where we nabbed a bunch of porgies, big key West grunts, some lane snapper, a ton of short red grouper, and a pair of keeper grouper. Another great day is paradise!
Target for the day was amberjack along with some other meat for the box. The fish did not disappoint. We left off from cape yacht club a little after 7 am. We headed out thru Sanibel A span and out and around the lighthouse. We stopped around 15 miles out to pick up some baitfish. After procuring a couple dozen good pieces, we set our sights on a nice structure out in 95 ft of water. Upon arrival,we fired down the first live bait and was immediately hooked up. After a solid tug of war and some drag screaming runs, a 50 lb aj hit the deck.
Each angler proceeded to drop down baits and hook up, with several of the fish getting the better of us and breaking us off on the wreck. We added another 40 lb and 30 lb fish to the fishbox before taking off for some other fish. The rest of the day was a steady pick of porgies, yellowtail snapper, vermillion and lane snapper heading for the fish box. We caught countless throw back red grouper up to 19.5". Smooth seas all day make for a comfortable and great day on the water. |
